Fisherman's Village, Bophut
Fisherman's Village is the historic core of Bophut, on Samui's north coast: a single street of two-storey Chinese-Thai shophouses running parallel to the beach. The timber buildings are the reason to come - they are among the few pieces of pre-tourism architecture left on the island - and most now hold restaurants, bars and shops rather than fishing businesses.
On Friday evenings the street closes to traffic for a walking market, which is the busiest the village gets and the best time to see it. On other nights it is quieter and the sea end of the street is a straightforward place to eat looking at the water.
Bophut has its own pier with services to Koh Phangan, so the village is walkable from an arriving ferry.
