Baan Chinpracha is one of the grand tin-era mansions of Phuket Town, built in 1903 for a family made wealthy by the island's mines. It is Sino-Portuguese in the fullest sense: an Italian-tiled floor, a central air well open to the sky, shuttered windows, European furniture and a Chinese ancestral shrine, all in the same house.
What makes it unusual is that it was never converted into an institution. The family still owns it, part of it is still lived in, and the rooms opened to visitors are furnished as they were — porcelain, photographs, a period kitchen and the original fittings rather than a reconstruction. Its interiors have been used as a location by period film productions.
It stands on Krabi Road, a few minutes' walk from the Thai Hua Museum and the Thalang Road shophouses.
