Eagle Square (Dataran Lang), Langkawi
Dataran Lang - Eagle Square - stands on the waterfront at Kuah, Langkawi's main town, where the ferries dock. Its centrepiece is a reddish-brown eagle about twelve metres tall, poised as if about to take off.
The bird is the island's emblem: Langkawi is generally read as deriving from helang, eagle, and kawi, reddish-brown. Brahminy kites are genuinely common over the island's mangroves.
The square is landscaped with pools, bridges and a small terrace, and is the first thing arriving ferry passengers see. It is free and open, and best in the late afternoon.
