Ao Kao, Koh Mak
Ao Kao runs along the south-west shore of Koh Mak and is the island's principal beach - a long shallow curve of pale sand with coconut palms behind it and a scatter of small resorts among the trees.
The water is calm and very shallow a long way out, which makes it easy for swimming and poor for anything needing depth. Looking out from the sand, a line of small islands sits offshore, and the sunsets over them are why most people choose this side of the island over the north.
Koh Mak is flat, largely given over to rubber and coconut, and held in long-standing family ownership - which is why development along even its main beach is low-rise and sparse. Boats reach the island from Laem Ngop on the Trat coast.
