The restored northern gate and rampart of one of the oldest walled cities in southern Thailand.
The Old City Wall, Nakhon Si Thammarat
Nakhon Si Thammarat was the seat of the Tambralinga kingdom and later the most important southern city of Ayutthaya, and it was walled from an early date. A restored section of the northern wall and its gate, Pratu Chai Nua, stands at the top of the old town and gives the clearest sense of the city's original extent.
The rebuilt brick rampart and crenellations run for a couple of hundred metres, with the moat line still traceable in front. The old city was long and narrow - a strip running north to south along a sand ridge - and the modern main road follows the same axis, so the layout is still legible on the ground.
The wall is at the northern end of the historic quarter; the great temple of Wat Phra Mahathat lies at the southern end of the same street.
