Suchart Subsin's Shadow Puppet House
Nang talung is the shadow-puppet theatre of southern Thailand: figures cut from hide, articulated at the arms, worked against a lit screen by a single performer who voices every character. Nakhon Si Thammarat is its heartland, and Suchart Subsin was among its best-known masters.
His house is part workshop, part museum and part theatre. Puppets in every stage of making are on show, from the raw hide to the finished, painted figures; the family still cuts them by hand, and demonstrations behind the screen show how a performance actually works — the light, the shadow and the voices.
It is on a residential street a short ride from the centre of town, and the visit is personal rather than institutional.
