What changed across the week
The trend runs from unsettled to settled. The first two days are the roughest of the period, with swell around 1.3 m and rain in the mornings. From Friday onwards the sea eases day by day — 1.2 m, then 1.1 m, 1.0 m and finally 0.9 m by Monday 26 May.
Tides move in the opposite direction: the daily high tide grows steadily from 2.96 m on Wednesday to 3.34 m on Monday, and shifts about an hour later each day, from late afternoon to mid-evening.
Who this affects
Sea state matters most to passengers on open-water crossings between Phuket and the surrounding islands, where smaller, faster boats feel swell more than large vehicle ferries. Road services — buses, minivans and private transfers — are affected differently: heavy morning rain slows traffic rather than stopping it.
Practical impact for travellers
On the choppier days at the start of the week, consider a seat low and towards the middle of the vessel, keep motion-sickness remedies to hand, and stow electronics in a dry bag as spray is more likely. Morning departures on 21 and 22 May are the ones most likely to meet rain and moving water.
Low tide can affect boarding at shallow beach piers, where boarding may switch to a longtail shuttle. Allow extra time at the pier on days with a midday or early-afternoon low.
