Hat Yao - Long Beach - runs along the south-east shore of Phi Phi Don and is the island's best beach for simply swimming: a long stretch of white sand, gently shelving, with Shark Point and its reef a short swim offshore.
The reef here is the reason to bring a mask. Blacktip reef sharks are regularly seen over it in the early morning - small, harmless to swimmers, and the origin of the name.
It is around a thirty-minute walk from Tonsai along a rough coastal path, or a few minutes by longtail. The walk is not advisable after dark, and boats stop running in the evening.
