A warm spring-fed pool of extraordinary colour, in lowland rainforest at Khao Pra-Bang Khram.
The Emerald Pool, Krabi
Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, lies in the Khao Pra-Bang Khram wildlife sanctuary in the east of Krabi province. It is a natural basin fed by warm mineral springs, and dissolved limestone gives the water a green so saturated it looks artificial.
A boardwalk and forest path of about eight hundred metres lead in from the entrance through genuine lowland rainforest - one of the last substantial patches in southern Thailand, and the habitat of Gurney's pitta, one of the rarest birds in Asia. Beyond the main pool a smaller and hotter Blue Pool (Sa Nam Phut) can be looked at but not entered; its colour shifts through the day with the light.
Swimming is allowed in the main pool, which is shallow, warm and busy in the middle of the day. It is usually visited together with the hot springs a short distance west.
